Our Lady of Guadalupe Room
Our Lady of Guadalupe is a Catholic title of the Blessed Virgin Mary associated with a series of five Marian apparitions in December 1531. The Virgin Mary appeared four times before Juan Diego beginning December 9, 1531, and once before his uncle, Juan Bernardin.
The visions were at a place called Hill of Tepeyac with a request for a church to be built there. Juan went to his archbishop but the archbishop said no on two occasions. Finally the archbishop asked for a miraculous sign to prove Our Lady's identity. The Virgin Mary arranged flowers in Juans cloak and the flowers fell to the floor and on his cloak was the image of the Virgin of Guadalupe.
A church was built on the hill and is now a basilica. This is an important pilgrimage and is one of the most visited churches in the world. Juan Diego's cloak with the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe is displayed in this basilica.
The Virgin of Guadalupe is the patroness of Mexico and the Continental of Americas and is especially venerated by Native Americans. For Mexicans and Mexican-Americans as well as other Latinos, Our Lady of Guadalupe is a powerful symbol of devotion, identity, and patriotism.
Her feast is celebrated on December 12.
Juan Diego was canonized by St John Paul II in 2002, the first saint from the Americas. His feast day is December 9.
St. Martha Room
St. Martha lived in biblical times while Jesus was on earth. Living in Bethany, she had a sister, Mary and a brother, Lazarus. She is honored for her confession of faith in the Lord which beseeches Jesus to restore life to her dead brother.
In Aramaic the name Martha means “the lady, the mistress” the feminine counterpart of “the master”. On one occasion she prepares the meal for Jesus while Mary sits at Jesus’ feet listening to him speak. Martha, burdened with much serving, came to Jesus and said. “ Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me by myself to do the serving? Tell her to help me.” The Lord said to her in reply, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things. There is a need for only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part and it will not be taken away from her.” Luke 10:38-42.
The evangelist, Matthew in Chapter 6 emphasized what our Lord said on several occasions about the primacy of spiritual….”Do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink, or worry about your body, what you shall wear…first seek the Kingdom of God and his righteousness”.
When Lazarus died, it was Martha who went out to meet Jesus when he was coming to their house telling Him “if you had been here, Lazarus would not have died, but I know that whatever you ask of God, He will grant you.” And when questioned by Jesus she shows that she is a woman of faith. “I believe you are the Christ, the son of God, the one who has come into this world.” And when Jesus goes to the tomb and says to take away the stone, it is she , ever practical, objects “Lord by now he will smell, it is now the fourth day.”
In the Bible story of Martha and Mary, [Luke 10:37-42], Martha is introduced as the woman who “welcomed Jesus into her house”. So hospitality was her paramount virtue. This accounts for her cult as the patron saint of food professionals, butlers, housekeepers, and homemakers and why she is often shown in art with a ladle, a broom, or a set of keys. St Martha, as the saint of active practical women, is perhaps unfairly contrasted with her more laid back and contemplative sister Mary.
The Feast of St Martha is July 29.
