Mary’s House is a 501(c3) non-profit Catholic based house for pregnant women of all faiths, 18 years of age and older. Mary’s House walks beside women on the journey to motherhood from pregnancy to delivery of their baby. Residents are invited to stay at Mary's House through their pregnancy and up to six months after the birth of their baby if they are willing to become a successful parent and productive citizen to their community.
In the 1960’s, The Schaad Family and their 13 children had a dairy farm, across the river from Mary’s House, known as the Silverheels Farm. Several of their children, including Joe & Paul, picked up potatoes, the primary crop, at Silverheels Farm at that time. Silverheels was their “Dream Farm”. In 2008 Joe and Paul were blessed to be able to purchase the Silverheels farm to raise cattle and farm the land. The big beautiful farm house needed lots of TLC.
Several members of the Schaad family gathered and prayed, dedicating the house to Mother Mary. They placed a statue of Mary in the front yard of the house.
One day Joe was at the farm walking across the yard on his way to feed the cattle. When he passed the house he stopped, looked up, and said, “Mary, what do YOU want me to do with this house?” At that moment he was overcome with an unmistakable answer, “SAVE MY CHILDREN”.
Joe just couldn’t shake off what he had heard in his heart, mind, and soul and decided to share this with his family.
In 2015 it began, the Schaad family shared their story and decided to give their house to be a safe haven for mothers and babies as an alternative to abortion.
It has been over 5 years since the Board was formed and much dedication, hard work, and many, many prayers have gone into this magnanimous effort to create Mary’s House at Silver Heels Inc. It began with the development of a board with 15 members. Members of the board and community have worked diligently in the construction and labor to build Mary’s House to where it is today. Many hours of labor were donated and supplies were furnished from many individuals and businesses. It has truly been a “labor of love”.
Mary’s House promotes a healthy family oriented lifestyle to the residents who grace our doors. Life is full of challenges and choices. The choices we make can sometimes lead us in a direction we don't want to go and we are left asking ourselves, "how did I get here" or "what do I do now"? Mary's House staff and volunteers believe there is "always hope" and desire to be "willing hands" of God to those who are in need our assistance. There is no cost for housing to the mothers and babies who reside at Mary's House. It is our hope to help lift up mothers by walking hand-in-hand with them to identify and possibly redirect how to make better choices for themselves and their babies for a brighter future. All resident mothers are provided with personalized goal management services. Together, the staff and volunteers will work with the residents to identify and pursue the skills necessary to develop a concrete plan for achieving happiness, confidence, and self worth in this special time of their lives.
The development goals may include birthing class, parenting skills, life skills, substance abuse education, mental health needs, financial education, continued education or GED, training and employment, housing, transportation options, spiritual well-being, legal issues, along with other areas needed that we are able to assist with.
